Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed Nottingham Forest should land a transfer ban or fine as punishment if found guilty of their Financial Fair Play breaches.

The 66-year-old, who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now operates a football consultancy advising top clubs, emphasized that he would seek to reform the financial regulations to ensure fairness if he were in charge of the top flight. Nottingham Forest were accused of breaking Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules in January, allegedly exceeding their £61 million allowable losses over three years up to last season’s end.

This loss is likely due to their active transfer window, during which they brought in no fewer than 30 players in the 2022-23 campaign after gaining promotion. Everton have already been found guilty of a similar breach and (pending appeal) were given a 10-point deduction earlier this season, putting them in danger of relegation. Both Everton and Forest were also charged with a separate breach, with the verdict expected before this season ends.

Wyness, speaking on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast, said, “If I were in charge, I’d consider imposing a fine or a transfer window ban. I believe that is the appropriate approach in this situation. I would then promptly explore the possibility of revising these Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to create a more equitable framework. A points deduction is an excessively severe measure that surpasses the intended purpose of punishment. This season must mark a turning point for financial penalties in the Premier League, given the significant public outcry.”
